The line:
You can use several types of line. Nylon, braid or fluorocarbon.
Nylon is the most versatile. Its elasticity allows it to soak up the shocks when a fish shakes its head, thus avoiding the fish throwing the hook. It's transparent, so it's quite discreet. It will also dampen the strong vibrations from plugs and spoons, making for more comfortable fishing.
Braid is a more technical line, made up of braided filaments which give it a better breaking strain than nylon of the same diameter. Although it isn't quite as dicreet as nylon, another advantage of this line is that it's non-stretch, which is very useful when you want to feel the faintest of takes.
Fluorocarbon can be used for leaders or as your main line. Two qualities set it apart from other lines. The first is that it's almost invisible under water, making it extremely discreet. The second is that it's more resistant to cutting (predator teeth) than braid and nylon. As a leader, it can be tied to braid or nylon using the Allbright knot. As main line, its stretch somewhere between nylon and braid makes for comfortable fishing, as well as good sensitivity for detecting delicate takes.
